December Campout 2009 Recap

Two weekend’s ago  we held  our troop’s December camp-out. We decided to spend the weekend at a lean-to site at one of council’s camps. We had planned to arrive on Friday night but the weather forecast  was not very positive and when we called the camp’s care taker to find out the conditions he told us, and I quote, “You’ll freeze your butts off in those lean-to’s.”  So we decided to go up Saturday and we realized this was a very wise choice when the other troop that was in camp that weekend said that it was whiteout conditions when they arrived. So with these weather conditions we decided it would be better to come up to camp Saturday morning.

So we left Saturday morning and when we arrived at the camp the weather could not have been better. The roads were clear and the camp really was a winter wonderland. We got to camp and unloaded our gear and began the trek up to camp which required us to break a trail through around three or four feet of snow. Once we set up camp and everyone got settled in we began to heat up the chicken noodle soup that our assistant scoutmaster and his father had made the night before for us. The soup was great and even after all seven of us had two or three bowls we still had almost three and a half gallons left! Not wanting to waste our good fortune we headed over to the cabin of the other troop and graciously offered the rest of the soup to them. They accepted our offer and invited us back to their site later that night for a campfire and desert. We went back to camp and spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing sledding and exploring. As for me I took some time to explore with my camera and I was able to capture some great shots of the sunset. For dinner Saturday we had a delicious chili that was prepared by the leaders for us (a rare treat). The chili just hit the spot and no one had less than two bowls. After dinner we got things cleaned and relaxed around camp until it was time to go to the campfire. At 7:00pm we headed over to the other troop’s site for the campfire. We had a great time talking and hanging out with their scouts and leaders and we enjoyed some great dutch oven desert. The scouts in our troop even got do a little more sledding right outside this troop’s cabin. After hanging out and eating a good helping of desert we thanked our hosts and headed back to camp. Everyone got into bed and slept quite considering the chilly temperatures that night. Everyone was up bright and early Sunday morning to pack our gear and head home. We had breakfast, cleaned our site and started hauling gear down to the trucks. We had a great time during this trip.  After we checked out with the ranger we headed home to hot showers and warm beds.
