Local Scouts Honored for Actions after Accident

It’s not everyday that scouts from my area are honored for heroic actions. An excerpt of the article that ran in our local paper is below:

Two Boy Scouts were honored Thursday evening for their swift, intelligent actions when a 14-year-old Perry Jr. High School eighth grader was struck by a car on Oxford Road last year.  “They remained calm even when adults did not,” Town Police Sergeant Robert Philo, who was first on the scene of the April 20 accident . “They are an outstanding credit to scouting and to our community as well,” he said.  Brian Fee, 17, and Dale Raar, both of New Hartford, were walking along Oxford Road when Jared Chontow got off his school bus and was hit by a car driven by 16-year-old Zeeshan Akhtar.  Though many adults on the scene did not know what to do, Fee and Raar immediately ran to Contow’s side, comforted him and tried to prevent him from moving so he wouldn’t be further injured before emergency workers could get to the scene, Philo said.  “I was told if this had been handled differently it could have been a fatality,” Philo said. Fee, who has just become an Eagle Scout, and Raar, who is working toward that goal, said their scout training had prepared them for such situations.

The boys said the training they had received from scouts helped them to remain calm and keep the situation from getting worse. This story shows how being prepared can really save the day.
